Brisbane 150 Celebrations Big City Draw fulfilled its originally intended objective and outcomes bringing music and drawing together as conduits for communication and visual expression and providing opportunities for creativity and cultural engagement for everyone

Drawing helps us think, invent and communicate – regardless of age and ability and can assist people to see, think, invent and take action.

Drawing is fundamental to the training of students in all the creative industries and a powerful way to communicate with each other.

It is an activity where the head, heart and hand of man come together.

Artist in Residence 2009

Amelia Batchelor

Over the period of the draw Amelia inspired everyone with her quiet dedication, her inspiring drawing, her multiple skills and wonderful abilities.

Next on the agenda for Amelia is a move to Melbourne in August. Having raised a son, gained an enormous wealth of knowledge and experience in graphic and other art mediums, she now wishes to immerse herself in drawing and painting. She wants to take life drawing classes as well as expand herself in a city renowned for its cultural richness, exploring her options while journeying along a new road in the world of art

Brisbane 150 Celebrations BIG CITY DRAW's philosophy and message is indeed powerful. It is about bringing people of all cultures and communities together to create an environment that is not only green and sustainable, but also enriching in the way we live in it and deal with each other.

Held 11am to 2pm daily Sat June 27 – Thur July 9, 2009 in the Queen Street Mall in two locations Queen Street Mall Stage and Cnr Queen Street and George Street at the Westpac Wall and in the area behind Milano.

This community project presented by Brisbane City Council, Brisbane 150 Celebrations and QSM Kids brought drawing and music together to create a record of life at Brisbane in its 150th anniversary year.

Over fourteen days thousands of people enjoyed drawing to the sound of music provided by some of Brisbane’s best, and most exciting music makers. They were

BSB Swing, South Brisbane Federal Band, Men Wot Sing, Creative Generation Big Band, Mandolins in Brisbane, View from Madeleine’s Couch, Gerard Mapstone, Francesca de Valence, Yellow Cabs Bayside Brass, Lady and the Larrikin, The Danger Bunnies, Inclusion Fusion, So What, Vox Montage and The Embers

The base of the Westpac Wall on the corner of George Street and the Queen Street Mall became a ‘canvas for conversation’. Due to the timing of our event the day world famous pop star Michael Jackson died this space provided a place in the city for an outpouring of public grief and social comment. Prepared with Amcor donated recycled board people young and old grabbed Pelikan/Artline black and red markers and drew enthusiastically.

•PEOPLE/BELIEFS •HEART/CARING

•LEAF/PLANET •GUITAR/HARMONIOUS RELATIONSHIPS

The combined efforts of paper material sponsors Visy, Spicer’s Paper and Platypus Graphics produced the BCD ‘sassy shapes’. Sassy shapes are just a little bit impudent, lively and stylish. They visually represent society's concerns and mores. They proved popular with all age groups who completed them with great gusto.

Monte Marte International supplied refillable wax crayons, which proved a great hit with all those drawing as well as all the canvases and an easel for our artist in residence to complete a drawing on stage each day to the performances of music at 11am 12noon and 1pm.

BANNERS FOR BRISBANE 150 CELEBRATIONS

One of Australia’s oldest fabric distributors Charles Parson provided eco friendly Adversol as a canvas for groups and the community to complete Banners for Brisbane 150. Volunteers from the Magdalene Court Retirement Village, Vera Street Community Garden Project, Access Arts, Westpac and the Queensland Taiwan Association completed two.
