The Next Wave Festival of Melbourne presents an open invitation to take a leap into the unknown and answer the question ‘How can we act boldly and imaginatively, in both art and in life’?.
Is no risk too great?
Brisbane artist Amelia Batchelor (Big City Draw Queen Street Mall Brisbane 2009) is in Melbourne working as a volunteer at the Next Wave Festival now in its final days for 2010 (May 13 – 30).
The festival has for 25 years explored many themes and this year it is the role of risk in a risk-adverse culture.
In 2010 it asks the question that as people become experts in micro managing their behaviour will it distract them from taking risks and, what does risk mean in our volatile financial and global expansion times?
Creative intervention is always necessary for society to progress both personally and professionally. True artists and creators take risks on a regular basis because it is the only way they can ‘imagine the future’.
It is the half full or half empty choice, the what we can do for our country decision. We all need to participate and encourage others to step outside their comfort zones to help offer a vision of how it could be. It would be easy to opt out, but you could decide to take the risk and jump on the ‘Next Wave’.
Every day in cities all around the world artists take risks many of them working with minimal resources to challenge society to not rest on its laurels but to embrace the future through change.
Change, change is inevitable and in a progressive country, change is constant. While we need to be conservative to preserve all that is good we must also become radicals to create and shape the future.
If you can catch the final days of the New Wave Festival the Lord Mayor of Melbourne Robert Doyle says to ‘expect courageous works and cathartic experiences’.
If you miss it you will have to plan ahead to take the Next Wave in 2011.
