My Favourite Book Reading Cupid
I must confess to being one of those people who reads books after they have passed their current popularity phase and, often on a plane. It has never been intentional, but about finding time and in some cases, having missed it when it was about.
Whatever the reason in a lot of ways it has often worked out for the best because it helps me to be objective without being influenced by hype.
The Time Traveler’s Wife was one such book. When I said to my son how much I had enjoyed reading it on four flights in four weeks….he was amazed I hadn’t known about it when it was released or heard of the movie starring one of my favourite Australian actors Eric Bana.
My research on the net has revealed there has been a lot of controversy about this novel since it was released in 2003. Some people praise author Audrey Niffenegger while others have given her a very hard time, projecting all their own thoughts and agendas onto what they have to say.
I just couldn’t help admiring her imaginative mind and how clever she had been in utiising a continuing fascination with time travel to explore a relationship between Henry and Clare. Its a great story. I had nothing but admiration for her ability to maintain our interest as Henry, at various ages interacts with Clare as we see saw back and forth from her childhood to adulthood and everything in between.
For me it was simply an exploration of what love is. And, in this day and age if we find it even if for a little while, then how blessed are we. I am glad I have read the book before I see the movie.
