The Studio at Art Melbourne 2010 – Affordable & Collectable

Art Melbourne is on this week, held in the grand manner in the splendidly restored historical exhibition space in the gardens at Carlton at Melbourne.

The Studio is a purpose built space within this now major art exhibition, which highlights a selected group of self represented emerging artists by providing them with an the opportunity to run their own mini gallery with works priced under $5,000.

The artists are all unrepresented in Victoria and so this initiative also provides locals with an opportunity to buy works not available in local galleries.

It proved so popular last year they had a great many artists clamouring to take part this year but only 23 were chosen so that art browsers can have a chance to buy from some of the hottest artists around before they are discovered, nationally.

Queensland artist Susan Schmidt made the cut and has been invited to take part. Great News.

Born at Hahndorf in South Australia Susan has made her home in recent years on the Sunshine Coast at Noosa Heads in Queensland.

She uses bold, bright contemporary colours and her aim to ‘capture the moment’ is well documented now in an impressive body of work she has now built up over the past five years.

Her works are now also represented in both public and private collections in Australia and internationally and this week she will break new ground at Melbourne.

I first met with Susan in Brisbane some six years ago introduced through a mutual friend and I have followed her career with great interest.

A lot of her early works were of enigmatic Noosa scenery and, when briefly involved in an Art Gallery at Brisbane in 2005-2006, I encouraged her to also consider painting cityscapes and Blue Poles, the first image in this article, is one of a group of wonderful works that emerged focused on historical Spring Hill.

Susan also painted a splendid group of paintings for an exhibition held in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley in 2008 that focused on the Brisbane River.

It was also much acclaimed and I am sure many will recognise the places painted.

I am glad to see that she is combining both sea and city at Melbourne with a theme called Seaburbia. What a great title.

Susan is a very talented stylish lady with a wonderful commitment to both her art, style and excellence and I am looking forward to visiting Art Melbourne 2010 later this week.’
