Well here we are again, can you believe it’s Oscars time again!
It just seems like yesterday we were swooning over exquisite Lupita Nyong’o in baby blue Prada, a perfectly polished Cate Blanchett in stardust Armani Prive and the delectable Charlize Theron in black Dior Couture.
So how did these lovely ladies of the silver screen fair at this years night of nights?
Are they on my best dressed list this year or have they been pipped at the post by their stunning stablemates?
Lets take a look…
I’ll be brutally honest, I felt that Oscar fashions this year were a little safe.
Not to say that there weren’t some stand outs, it’s just that we had seen many of the stars in the same looks.
Variations on a theme I guess you could argue.
Black took precedence this year, and while I am a huge fan, it doesn’t always photograph well.
Unfortunately the beautiful details on a fabulous gown can be lost.
Take for instance two of my favourite looks from the night, Cate Blanchett in Maison Margiela and Sienna Miller in Oscar de la Renta.
Cate was her usual stunning self in a beautifully fitted dress marking the return of John Galliano for Maison Margiela.
This was the perfect foil for the magnificent turquoise neckpiece by Tiffany & Co.
You could just make out the delicate frayed edges around the armholes that added a soft edginess that was mirrored by her hairstyle.
The back was a knockout.
Sienna’s dress, when I saw a close up shot was the most gorgeous Guipure lace with black velvet trim.
So it just goes to show it’s so important to choose wisely for the red carpet, the devil is in the detail.
Also magnificent in black was Margot Robbie in Saint Laurent.
Like Cate, this number was all about showcasing that totally amazing Van Cleef & Arpels necklace, originally designed for the Duchess of Windsor.
She is so hot, you could have put her in a sack and I would have loved it, and the lipstick choice!
Call the fire brigade…
Next up in the monochrome class is Marion Cotillard in white Christian Dior Haute Couture.
She had accessorised with flawless Chopard diamond earrings.
This dress will divide opinions, but I loved the back detail and thought it interesting and worn to perfection.
Leave it to the French to rock an unconventional look with a ’60’s vibe.
Lady Gaga in Azzedine Alaia.
There has to be one “out there” moment on the red carpet and Gaga was it!
Loved the detail in the dress.
The red leather gloves (even if she looked like she was about to perform an experiment using dry ice) were the perfect twist for her.
The hills are alive…
Lupita Nyong’o’s Calvin Klein Collection pearl creation was a sight to behold.
Chopard jewels and Nicholas Kirkwood heels, were an excellent choice for a dress that needed no extra detailing.
Think this would have been amazing in the flesh, I just don’t know how she sat down in it!
Jenna Dewan Tatum in Zuhair Murad was hotter than husband Channing Tatum.
The plunging neckline and silver finishes were accompanied by Stuart Weitzman heels, Lee Savage bag and Lorraine Schwartz jewels.
As I have mentioned before, yellow is a favourite of mine in awards season.
Jennifer Hudson ticked all the boxes for me in an elegant strapless butter shade by Romana Keveza.
The colour was an excellent choice for her skin tone and the pixie haircut looks fabulous, drawing attention to the lovely Lorraine Schwartz jewels.
Another divine shade was the baby rose pink of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Ralph and Russo gown.
I thought this was exquisite on first sight.
The colour angelic, the grooming faultless and the ruby earrings, WOW!
I was a little unsure of the rose detail on the sleeve, but a close up proved it was delicate and a winner from Australian haute couture label based in Paris.
The British contingent showed they can hold their own in Hollywood with Rosamund Pike, Georgina Chapman, Hannah Bagshawe and Sophie Hunter all making the old dart proud.
Pike in red Givenchy that made her waist positively waspish, was a dream. A simple shoe and Lorraine Schwartz jewels were all she needed to own this night.
Georgina Chapman half of design duo Marchesa, wore her own label and accessorised with Munnu jewels and Harvey Weinstein. What more does a girl need?
Hannah Bagshawe and Sophie Hunter, partners to Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne and Benedict Cumberbatch respectively, shone in their own right.
Bagshawe in McQueen with a fabulous feathered waist detail, and Hunter (who is pregnant) in a stunning Grecian inspired red asymmetrical frock which was super sexy, but oh so tasteful.
Gold sandals and clutch rounded out the look.
Keira Knightly could take a leaf out of her book for pregnancy dressing.
Knightly is generally dreamy, but her sartorial choices for this season seem to be reflecting her pregnancy hormones, all over the shop.
Working the metallic end was Naomi Watts.
I loved this Armani Prive, and from the side it was even better.
Such a sexy shape, fitted flawlessly, it was modern and fresh.
Oh and the Anna Hu Haute Joaillerie earrings in deep blue were a stunning finish.
Not floating my boat, I’m sorry to say were Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore and Scarlet Johansson.
Kidman who usually nails it, fell short in this Louis Vuitton strapless column.
Not terrible, but the colour on her left a lot to be desired.
The same for Moore, the Chanel was stunning but totally washed her out.
I love Julianne in a strong colour with her stunning red tresses.
And Scarlet, don’t start me.
That Swarovski necklace was way too showgirl, even for me.
The whole look completely missed the mark.
Back to the costume shop for you.
Meryl Streep rocked custom Lanvin, one of my all time favourite labels.
Such a classy dame, always elegant and understated. She lets the talent do the talking.
I’m going to mention Lisa Wilkinson from channel 9’s Today show, who I thought looked stunning in a navy creation by Pallas Couture. Loving the pockets and the magnificent drape through the back.
She is one of my favourite TV presenters and a lady through and through!
Always a great dresser, she certainly got it right.
And on a final note, the most heartwarming fashion story of the night belongs to Patricia Arquette.
When she was little, she told her best friend that she would wear one of her dresses when she won an Academy Award.
They grew up and both followed their chosen paths, actor and designer.
How wonderful that Arquette kept her promise and took out the Oscar wearing a stylish black and white gown by Rosetta Getty.
So there you have it!
Another year and another red carpet rolled up till 2016.
Who will take out the honours then?
