Trying to pinpoint their unique characteristics, in the nineteenth century scholars gave great periods of historical architectural design styles names that today you may have heard, such as Baroque, Gothic, Neoclassical, Palladian, to name a few.
The style does not just conveniently end one day and another start the next. There are always periods of time when they overlapped and were reinterpreted in different ways, depending the timeline of where and when they were produced.
There were quite large time lapses too, as design inspired by that of ancient Greece and Rome as well as influences brought back from the Crusades and the far East inspired architects all over Europe and England, on to the new world in the Americas, and then internationally to their colonies, including Australia.
