Friends Catching Up – Fratelli Fresh, the Art of Retail

For the last four years or so, when I have come to Sydney, my son has whisked me off to enjoy the experience of shopping at Fratelli Fresh, Waterloo, a clever creative Italian providore.

It is sited inside a huge warehouse that is simply and stylishly fitted out to accommodate many different areas, including some off street parking that no doubt comes in handy on a Sunday when the nearby Hillsong is in full swing.

On the ground floor you can select from the freshest flowers, fruit and veg, as well as special cuts of meats, marinated and fresh game birds of all types, a huge selection of unique Italian cheeses. The choice of fresh herbs has to be seen to be believed and there is a gorgeous array of Italian breads,

There is also a well fitted out school where you can take an Italian creative cookery class.

Up on the first floor you can choose from a simply marvelous display of Italian comestibles or alternatively feast, cost effectively, on the creative cuisine at Café Sopra.

This stylishly simple Café, with its huge blackboard menu, was recently awarded “Favourite Mediterranean” by the judges of the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide, and “Best Cafe” by Time Out magazine.

My son and I have enjoyed many a scrumptious Saturday breakfast there, which includes some amazing and innovative dishes.

Our favourite is the really incredible, stacked full of fruit Italian bread toast, which is piled high with the freshest of fresh Italian ricotta that has been drizzled all over with honey that tastes as if it was harvested fresh from the hive an hour earlier.

Today a very dear friend, who hasn’t enjoyed good health in the past few years, invited me to join her there for lunch, a first. What a happy time it was.

When we arrived it was packed literally to the exposed rafters. The queue was a half an hour long, but chairs were quickly made available and drinks offered to stave off our hunger and thirst while we waited. It was very relaxed and very well done.

Our lunch , chosen from the smaller blackboard of specials was indeed, delicious, delivered with perfect timing and impeccable service.

Desserts had to be on our menu as we watched so many pass by that looked truly scrumptious and worthy of a song. And they were.

We were serviced by willing waitresses without attitude, just great big smiles, and left feeling well pleased with our choice of catching up venue.

There is now three Fratelli Fresh outlets to choose from in Sydney. The original at Waterloo, the second adjacent to the Wharf Theatre and Theatre for Young People in Walsh Bay and, the third in the posh part of Pott’s Point.

FF were among the first to offer consumers the choice of roomy recyclable large canvas style shoulder bags stamped with their logo, which immediately became a statement of style and status in fashion conscious Sydney.

It will be interesting to see if, in the future, they become a phenomenon interstate as well.  They do know a great deal about the art of retail.
