But people power is like a muscle: if you don’t use it, you lose it. ‘ says Simon Sheikh of GetUp – Action for Australia,
Can you join GetUp on June 5 for a fun, family-friendly rally to say “yes” to a price on pollution and clean energy?
If you don’t know about it yet, GetUp is an independent movement to build a progressive Australia and bring participation back into our democracy. It is an independent, grass-roots community advocacy organisation giving everyday Australians opportunities to get involved and hold politicians accountable on important issues.
On their website you can check up on past and current campaigns they are actively involved in.
GetUp does not back any particular party, but aims to build an accountable and progressive Australia – an Australia with economic fairness, social justice and environmental sustainability at its core. Hundreds of thousands of people now belong and, as a member my pledge is to inform others to help grow this very important movement of over 445,000 Australians.
GetUp is a not-for-profit organisation, which receives no money from any political party or the government and rely solely on funds and in-kind donations from the Australian public.
Whether it is sending an email to a member of parliament, engaging with the media, attending an event or helping to get a television ad on the air, GetUp members take targeted, coordinated and strategic action.
You can join in and become a volunteer or help out by sharing the message. You can check out all the action by accessing their website http://www.getup.org.au/
Today they sent me a letter about their part in the coming National Day of Climate Action.
Dear Carolyn —
The next three weeks are crucial. The Government, the Greens and the Independents are finalising the details of their response to climate change in a series of intensive negotiations beginning today. Over the next few weeks they’ll decide whether to be ambitious when setting their carbon price and investments in renewable energy or whether to give in to the big polluters. As we’ve seen before, often the loudest voice wins. That’s where you come in.
We’re joining with organisations that together represent over three million Australians to organise massive rallies across the country on June 5. It’s okay if you’re not a ‘rally’ kind of person – in fact, it’s better. Our movement needs people like you to come out and show your support and speak up for a clean energy future. We’ll make sure June 5 is a fun, family-friendly day, with bands, great speakers and even face-painting for the kids!
Australians don’t just talk – we get on with things. On June 5, if enough of us act, we’ll change the debate over a carbon price from fear mongering over the cost of action, to awareness raising about the possibility of a clean energy future.
See you on June 5,
The GetUp Team.
