Janet Seidel Trio – Far Away Places at MRC by Janet Walker

Listen up, all you romantics reports Janet Walker our Super Sleuth for Spotlight Stories.

On September 28th The Janet Seidel Trio will present two concerts (3.00 pm and 7.30pm) at the Melbourne Recital Centre (MRC). The trio will perform in the MRC Salon, a venue uniquely suited to Janet’s intimate vocal style and piano, complimented by the rich acoustic sound of Chuck Morgan’s guitar, ukuleles and David Seidel’s bass.

The Sydney based jazz trio have chosen the MRC gig to launch their latest CD, Far Away Places; tracks include: Far Away Places, La Paloma, Midnight Sun, Moon River,  Golden Slumbers, Sand in My shoes, La Javanaise, If You Go Away, Historia de un Amor, Recado Bossa Nova, Kiss of Fire and many more.

The CD of vintage and retro songs takes advantage of the Trio’s ability to take the listener on a romantic journey… the moon on high, palm trees sway in a soft breeze, a night made for romance, Janet’s vocals, Chuck and David’s accompaniment, fresh and about as close to sublime as you can get.

Yup, you’ve guessed it; I’m a big fan of The Janet Seidel Trio. Janet’s personalised vocals and the guys’ musical interpretations raise songs that are mostly ‘old standards’ to a new level of  swinging enjoyment, evoking a response that ranges from the emotions of boy-meets-girl-boy-loses-girl through to the toe-tapping rhythms of boy-finds-girl and a good time is had by all.

The Janet Seidel Trio tours in the UK, Ireland, Europe and Japan. Since 2011, they have featured several times in cabaret or jazz trio mode at the MRC Salon – the shows… all sell outs.

During a break in her busy schedule, I caught up with Janet, the lady who has been described as ‘Australia’s first lady of Jazz’, and asked these questions:

When you perform in Melbourne do you and the guys have a favourite place to hang out?

Hanging out! Consulting with my boys, we love having a meal in Chinatown after the gig or going Greek, Lygon Street eateries are also a favourite.

When we did the Melbourne Ukulele Festival in March this year, we discovered the joys of late night dining just down the road from the Northcote Town Hall – great food.

Jazz in Sydney music venues, pretty limited, if time permits, visiting the great pubs and clubs in Melbourne, which feature live jazz is just so enjoyable.

The trio travels interstate and overseas to perform – how hard is it to keep bad hair days at bay?

“Bad Hair days! After all the years I’ve spent living out of a suitcase, hair can be a challenge.

I have a minimalist kit of travel curlers, straighteners (work that one out!) plus my exclusive range of Shiseido hair care products (I’ve warbled on a few Shiseido commercials in Japan!).

The biggest challenge is keeping fit and healthy on road tours and sorting out a drop-dead glamorous wardrobe that can be packed into a carry-on size bag”.

After the MRC concerts what’s upcoming for you, Chuck and David?

“Upcoming concerts and tours for the trio – we’re building up to a big Japanese tour in October.

Our first tour of Japan was in 1999 for the Kobe Jazz Festival and I can’t wait to get back.

We have many fans and friends in Japan.

The tours are always run like clockwork with first class tickets on the bullet train, attention to detail for all the sound checks, and with delicious Japanese banquets after every concert, yes, it is possible to put on weight in Japan!

Plus we have several Australian tours in 2014 (we’ll be coming back to Melbourne) and we hope to tour again in the UK”

Spring, romance and The Janet Seidel Trio; a winning combination, the MRC Salon will be setup in cabaret mode for the concerts.
