Brisbane City Council has a splendid record of hosting wonderful FREE lunchtime concerts each week in their impressive City Hall auditorium, right in the centre of the town.
You will need to be early – take a thermos and packed lunch if you want to secure your seat for the splendid show to take place on Tuesday 23rd July 2013. In the splendiferous all new surroundings of the main Auditorium, which has recently been refurbished in the grand manner, Brisbane’s ‘inimitable music pundit’ and much celebrated raconteur John Colwill will compére the audience from Rhinemaidens to the Ride of the Valkyries on a musical journey that showcases the composer Richard Wagner’s dramatic life.
Queensland Conservatorium brass ensembles, cello solo and arias and ensembles from Tristan, Tannhäuser and Rheingold will be involved, along with pianist and conductor Simon Kenway, who is appearing courtesy of Opera Queensland. Conservatorium brass ensembles will prelude the 12:00pm concert start time with pieces, including a chorale from Die Meistersinger, a trombone quartet arrangement of the procession to the minster from Lohengrin, arrangements for brass ensemble of Wagner highlights, and a stunning Horn ensemble arrangement of the prelude from Tristan and Isolde. Cellist Elizabeth Hubbard will be performing Wagner’s ‘Lied an den Abenstern’ from Tannhäuser, arranged for cello and piano by Friedrick Kummer.
Baritone Sam Hartley, sopranos Amanda Windered, Cassandra Seidemann, Naomi Drogemuller and Judit Molnar, along with mezzo soprano Clarice Williams will all feature, as will former singer with Opera Australia, Opera Frankfurt and the Frankfurt Kammeroper, Lunchtime Concert producer Janelle Colquhoun (Salubrious Productions). Janelle will sing the beautiful ‘Einsam in trüben Tagen’ from Lohengrin, where Elsa prays to God to deliver her knight in shining armour. In a dramatic and stentorian finale, the above six Rhinemaidens will sing Wagner’s immortal ‘Ride of the Valkyries’.
