The action is set in a department store where there is not only a focus on frocks and fashion, but also on good old fashioned service. Don’t be surprised if The Ladies in Black ask ‘Are you Being Served!’
Adapted from Madeleine St John’s 1993 novel of the same name, the show was a huge hit for the Queensland Theatre Company last season.
The ladies in question Kathryn McIntyre, Kate Cole, Christen O’Leary, Carita Farrer Spencer, Sarah Morrison, Deidre Rubenstein, Naomi Price and Lucy Maunder have all received great reviews.
They arrive on stage all wearing splendid costumes designed by award winning set and costume and set designer Gabriela Tylesova, who together with Simon Phillips, has one of the most successful designer-director relationships the Australian Theatre has yet enjoyed.
The world of costume has been fashioning its folds and foibles to suit simple style statements since World War II. Tylesova has been inspired to produce garments with a 50’s feel, showing off both The Ladies in Black’s figures and style.
The garments are all hand crafted, so they will withstand the rigours of dancing on stage with quick changes night after night.
A gentle comedy of shopping and manners, set to music, glamorous gorgeous, gowns like those celebrities such as Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn would have worn with grace, will send ladies stampeding to the vintage fashion store.
