Melbourne NOW White Night at NGV – Put On Your Dancing Shoes

White Night Melbourne is on Saturday 22nd February and is an evening set aside for an all-night arts and culture extravaganza in Melbourne, reflecting the complex cultural landscape of creative Melbourne. The city’s streets, laneways, landmarks and public spaces will turn into a cultural playground from dusk till dawn. The NGV International and the NGV Australia will also be open all night, offering a mix of free and ticketed events featuring spectacular light installations, exhibitions, song, dance and special dining experiences.

Hundreds of ‘night owls’ will descend on the NGV’s Great Hall where those wishing to groove out will don dancing shoes and headphones and dance the night away as a ‘silent disco’ transforms this amazing space. The façade of NGV International will also be illuminated as photographs of Melbourne’s skin art by Nicole Reed are projected onto the building.

Crowds will also be entertained with DJ sets in Rory Hyde’s architecturally designed Bin dome, 2013 and there will be also be a marathon fourteen hour long still-life drawing session in the Community Hall. Visitors can also drop by between 2am–9am for live a broadcast by 3RRR featuring live acoustic performances.

At NGV Australia Federation Square The Telepathy Project will participate in an endurance performance, enacting visitors’ dreams. Working with artworks from the NGV Collection that depict sleeping figures, visitors to the exhibition will be invited to take a postcard of these works, sleep with it under their pillow, record their dream and then drop the card back into the NGV.

Special features of the night include an Audiokinetic jukebox; a single participant, immersive artwork integrating sound, movement, vibration and light into a multisensory aesthetic experience, developed by Darrin Verhagen at RMIT’s Audiokinetic Experiments (AkE) Lab.

If you haven’t been to see the ticketed exhibition Edward Steichen & Art Deco Fashion, it will also be open all night. It’s a special salon showcasing the glamour and modernity of the Art Deco period with over 200 photographs and more than 30 fashion garments.

A range of artworks, including nine children’s commissions, will be activated from dawn to dusk across both NGV sites. Curator floor talks, live performances and a range of food and beverage options will also be on offer throughout White Night at the NGV, Sat 22 Feb, 7 pm – Sunday 23 Feb, 7 am – Click for More Details
