Mossgreen gallery in Melbourne is a hub for great art, with a great stable of artists showing wonderful works. English born award winning artist David Rankin began exhibiting in Australia first in 1968, and he won the prestigious Wynne Prize for Australian Landscape painting given by the Art Gallery of NSW in Sydney in 1983.
His works appear in all Australia’s national galleries, as well as many fine regional galleries and international private collections. Now residing in New York with his family, David Rankin’s current exhibition – New Days will be on display at Mossgreen gallery until 17th March. His Husband & Wife – Triptych was painted in 1994.
Inspired from when he first arrived in Australia by Aboriginal painting and their amazing sense of place, throughout his career those early insights have moulded the visual experiences of his life whether outback claypans, the walls of Jerusalem or the deserts of Mexico, producing many memorable works. Lavishly praised in the New York Times for the power, insight and quality of his work, Rankin was selected as Australia’s official representative in the UNESCO Fortieth Anniversary Exhibition celebrations that toured the world’s capitals. David Rankin – New Days Exhibition: Until 17 March 2014, 10am-5pm
A Celebration is a moving tribute to the work of 94 year old Judy Cassab AO CBE (b1920) who has twice won the Archibald Prize, the number one prize for artists to win in Australia awarded by the Art Gallery of NSW. Born in Vienna Australia and living through the deprivation of World War II, Cassab also moved to Australian in 1950. This wonderful retrospective exhibition has been arranged in conjunction with the Eva Breur Gallery, Sydney.
Cassab is a much honoured artist, who turned her emotional and cultural baggage of her war years slowly into a source for wonderment, producing many colourful fine portraits of people and works about life that reveal through their vibrancy the optimism that she retained all her life in the face of all odds.
She is indeed both an extraordinary human being and artist. Visit soon. Mossgreen: Auction, Gallery and Tearooms – 926-930 High Street, Armadale at Melbourne, Victoria
