Goethe, the 18th century German writer may have said “See Naples and die”, however I say, “See Naples and eat!” Once you have witnessed the magnificence of Naples, there is nothing left to experience. That is, as long as you have tasted the food! Now here in Sydney we have our own slice of Neapolitan life in the form of Via Napoli. Located in the family friendly suburb of Lane Cove, on Sydney’s north shore, this pizzeria has it all. Owners Luigi and Sonia Esposito greet their customers like long lost family, and proceed to feed them just like an Italian mama would.
Fresh from the wood fire, a Stefano Ferrara pizza oven imported from Naples to be precise, the metre long pizza doesn’t disappoint. Each slice is perfecto. This can be ordered with one, two or three combinations. We chose 1/3 Margherita, 1/3 quattro salumi, and 1/3 crudo e ruccola. Everyone was satisfied, nothing was left on our pizza board. Just keep a little room for dessert, it’s worth it.
Like most Italian eateries, children are welcomed with open arms. My beautiful godchildren loved every minute. Kate, 8, spent her time colouring in a cartoon version of Luigi, which she proudly presented to him at the end of our meal. Angus who is 11, was huge hit. We had bought him a soccer jersey while in Naples, which he wore to dinner. We chose Napoli number 7, Cavani, their hot young player and one of the waiters noticed. The next minute Angus was in the kitchen with the staff going crazy! They both had a ball and we were all made to feel very special.
So the next time you are in Sydney, and yearning for the authentic pizza experience, go no further than Via Napoli. Just remember, no variations, no split bills and no half/half, and everyones happy. It’s Buonissimo! – Ciao, Jo Bayley
